I want you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable on a regular basis. Let me explain why.
Topics:
If you want a muscle to get stronger, you have to stress test it with increasing weight.
I firmly believe that people operate in a similar manner: if you want to grow mentally stronger, you must be able to cope with increasing levels of stress.
Each of us needs something in our lives that challenges us and makes us feel uncomfortable.
Comfort is the slow death.
It makes us lazy, both physically and intellectually.
We must challenge ourselves to fight against the lure of too much comfort.
In terms of physical challenges, personally I like to run (well actually I HATE running…), I lift weights, and I take a karate class twice a week.
I don’t NEED to do any of that: I chose to because its HARD and it feels uncomfortable.
In that karate class, I often make mistakes, I get hit, I get put under stress testing during sparing, and otherwise suffer all kinds of discomforts and setbacks.
But you know what? It’s in the discomfort where I learn more: that’s where I am breaking new ground, because that which is comfortable I already know.
I take the same approach to intellectual pursuits: I read ancient classics or technical textbooks, basically anything that I find challenging and difficult to follow.
Our minds, like our bodies, are a blade that needs to be sharpened, otherwise it grows dull and blunted.
Learn a language, play chess, study mathematics: do something that forces you to concentrate in order to understand.
Train hard, train so hard that you feel like quitting, but keep going.
Quitting is easy. Quitting is comfortable. Quitters make excuses.
Finally, seek opposing views. Read news sites or blogs that you disagree with, or listen to podcasts from people you don’t always agree with to challenge your own bias.
Your beliefs, like your physical fitness, also need to be stress tested.
If they cannot stand up to stress testing, then they are weak and you should reconsider your beliefs.
Push, climb, strive. Do what it takes.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
