Captured by ideology

Ideologies in general, all ideologies, make no sense to me for the simple reason that they fail to acknowledge that the real world is not ideal.

An idealist will reject that reality, and instead try to reshape the real world to match their ideals. Such efforts will fail, and history of full of examples of failed ideologies.

Reality overwhelms all of them, eventually. The stubborn ones take generations as society is a poor student of history.

Sometimes however they can seem very attractive, and one can often be captured by an ideology without even knowing so.

"We all must strive to think for ourselves, and remain prepared to have our beliefs challenged."

One simple test can be applied to determine this:

If you cannot compliment "the other side" when they do something right, you may be captured by ideology.

The true idealist is pure of heart and thought, a real zealot, which by definition means that anyone who disagrees with them is an impure heretic.

We often apply such language to religious matters, but in fact we see this behaviour in many secular aspects of modern life like politics, activism, business, and even entertainment.

We all must strive to think for ourselves, and remain prepared to have our beliefs challenged.
