Momentum

The default state in nature is inertia:

"inertia

noun

  1. a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged. "the problem runs deeper than bureaucratic inertia"

  2. PHYSICS a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force. "the power required to overcome friction and the inertia of the moving parts""

To break through inertia and create momentum, energy must be applied, and that usually starts with leadership.

Momentum in an organisation is a series of small, rapid, compounding actions that are aimed at achieving a goal or set of goals.

Leaders need to create the right environment for this, via incentives and accountability, as it's not the natural state. Otherwise, inertia can become an embedded feature of the culture.

Leaders must challenge inertia.
