Android in Q1 2014 had majority market share for mobile phone operation systems on devices sold in the US, according to research by the Nielsen Company1. Take a look at this chart from their report:
I'm still somewhat saddened by the success of Android, not to detract from the engineers who worked on it, but it saddens me that so much mobile market share sits with a corporation who have advertising as their primary revenue stream.
We measure the success of mobile platforms by market share and app sales figures, rather than technology, innovation, and freedom of choice (i.e. lack of lock in). I see the current mobile industry as a missed opportunity, and await a disruption to break the current duopoly between Apple and Google.
